cyberpunk listings update
The lists of cyberpunkish artefacts in the menu ↵cyberpunk (see above) still are (and forever will be :-) work in progress, but I heavily updated them. The last days I was down with some kind of flu, hence couldn’t concentrate on harder tasks anyway, and so gave it a go. First I added a lot of movies to the ↵motion pictures list—in fact every single movie ↑Emily E. Auger calls ↵tech noir. In other words: I cannibalized her wonderful book (2011). Next I introduced two subcategories: ↵television and ↵video. In consequence the motion pictures list now only features movies which indeed have been released to the cinemas.
AUGER, EMILY E. 2011. Tech-noir film: A theory of the development of popular genres. Bristol, Chicago: Intellect.
This is such a nice piece of work and it totally keeps me away from working :D As your motion picture list is the most ‘complete’ one (at least it has a hell of a lot entries), you should consider adding this two movies: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki and Summer Wars by Mamoru Hosoda.
And I can’t wait for an update on the computer games.
Thank you a lot for that comment! I very much appreciate that you like the lists, and that you are kept from work by them, like me. Although I every day try to convince myself that compiling these lists is part of my work :-) I just added Miyazaki 1984 and Hosoda 2003 to the motion pictures list. How could I forget ‘Nausicaä’? Especially as I already saw it a long time ago. Thank you again for the additions, and … keep them coming, please.
As Japanese anime and manga clearly constitute a blooming culture of incredible depth in its own right, I am playing with the idea to open separate lists for them. But I am not sure if that would serve the cause, because with all the seminal ideas coming from Japan and exerting influence transnationally we suddenly have artefacts (like e.g. ‘Broken Saints’) which qualify as anime or manga by style, but are not produced in Japan. But then again ‘Japanese cyberpunk’ more than deserves focussed attention. I’ll go on thinking about how to structure the lists and sub-lists.
Until then I’ll fill them more and more—the computer games list, too … just to keep you from working ;-)
Now that the holidays are closing in, I finally had some time to take another look at your list and well, lightning struck and now I’m feeling quite stupid for I forgot my absolute favourite anime show of the early 2000s: Cowboy Bebop.
Think about it, you are in your late teens, you have no idea of what cyberpunk is supposed to be and suddenly you are surrounded by all the Deus Exes and Ghost in the Shells and Cowboy Bebops. Mind-boggling. All of these have left quite an impression on me, but the gloomy and dark scenery and the melancholic characterisation made Cowboy Bebop something very special to me. And thanks to living in the future, I am happy to finally be able to watch it in japanese XD
And now, sitting here and rethinking my lines I had yet another idea. What would you expect from sort of cyberpunkish music?
Thank you again, I added ‘Cowboy Bebop’ to the lists—I am really behind with the wonderful Japanese material, but I’ll catch up, I promise. Regarding cyberpunkish music—me personally, I do not have a clue about music, but Karen Collins wrote a fine article on industrial music and cyberpunk: Dead Channel Surfing. She wrote a whole book on it, too, her PhD-thesis. Got it somewhere. Once I found it, I’ll post it.
