The silhouette of that lady makes me think of >>In a lonely place<<….

    • zephyrin_xirdal Tuesday, 29th May 2012 at 13:20

No, sorry, it’s not ‘In a Lonely Place’ (Ray 1950), the lady is on her way in an earlier movie.

  • Alhambra Tuesday, 29th May 2012 at 17:26

Don’t know why, but the woman reminds me of Bette Davis …

    • zephyrin_xirdal Tuesday, 29th May 2012 at 18:02

Nope, not Bette Davis. But Bette Davis and the actress in the screencap nearly were perfect contemporaries.

  • Alhambra Tuesday, 29th May 2012 at 18:57

Okay, that … didn’t help at all. Next (un-)educated guess: Is the man Robert Mitchum? The movie is set in the early 40ies, isn’t it?

    • zephyrin_xirdal Tuesday, 29th May 2012 at 19:21

There’s no Robert Mitchum around, sorry, and the movie is mid-forties, I’d say.

      • zephyrin_xirdal Tuesday, 29th May 2012 at 19:48

All right, here’s some more info: The actress in question was one of the greatest female stars of her time. She acted with all the greats of the era: Lionel Barrymore, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Robert Mitchum, Spencer Tracy, James Stewart … you name it, she was on the screen with them. Astoundingly enough she is not well known to the wider public today. Mind: Just the name of the actress is not satisfactory as an answer, I want the name of the character she plays in the scene depicted, too.

Now I’m thinking of Katharine Hepburn, but I couldn’t find a movie fitting in that time.

  • KerLeone Tuesday, 29th May 2012 at 22:27

Must be Ava Gardner as Kitty Collins.

  • zephyrin_xirdal Wednesday, 30th May 2012 at 00:05

@Alhambra: Nope, it ain’t Katharine Hepburn—and she still is known today, I guess. Proof: You know her.
@KerLeone: Sorry, no Ava Gardner here, because ‘The Killers’ (Siodmak 1946) we already had :)

    Here’s another hint: There’s a dog in the movie … ;)

  • Alhambra Wednesday, 30th May 2012 at 06:46

Hm … “The thin man goes home” with Myrna Loy as Nora Charles?

    • zephyrin_xirdal Wednesday, 30th May 2012 at 06:54

Right into the bull’s eye! Congratulations, Alhambra, that’s your second solved riddle in a row! It indeed is the former Queen of Hollywood Myrna Loy as Nora Charles trying to secretly follow a suspect—with hilarious consequences—in ‘The Thin Man Goes Home’ (Thorpe 1945), last of the Thin Man series.
Now we would be interested in your deduction/detection process …

  • Alhambra Wednesday, 30th May 2012 at 07:02

First googeling actresses who worked with the named actors, then about same age as Bette Davis, then movies of that time (mid-fourties), then pictures to the possible movies with dog, and the one thing that made me sure was the lady’s haicut.

    • zephyrin_xirdal Wednesday, 30th May 2012 at 07:06

:) … and now I owe you exactly how much money for burning away your precious time?

  • Alhambra Wednesday, 30th May 2012 at 07:12

Forget about the money, I’d rather take a hint for quiz #29!

  • Alexander Rabitsch Wednesday, 30th May 2012 at 09:53

    #29 … is due for solvation …
