the alien’s shadow

Everybody knows the ‘↑Alien‘ (Scott 1979), but hardly anybody knows the actor behind the creature, Nigerian-born Bolaji Badejo. Above you can see him practicing on set—his movements remind me of ↑Max Schreck‘s performance in ‘↑Nosferatu‘ (Murnau 1922) and in consequence of Willem Dafoe in ‘↑Shadow of the Vampire‘ (Merhige 2000), an absolute must-see. By the way, in autumn 1979 the magazine Cinefantastique did an ↑interview with Bolaji Badejo. MERHIGE, EDMUND ELIAS. 2000. Shadow of the vampire [motion picture]. Santa Monica: Lions Gate Films. MURNAU, FRIEDRICH WILHELM. 1922. Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens [motion picture]. Berlin: Jofa-Atelier Berlin-Johannisthal. SCOTT, RIDLEY. … Continue reading

the lovecraft tie

Above these apparent hieroglyphics was a figure of evident pictorial intent, though its impressionistic execution forbade a very clear idea of its nature. It seemed to be a sort of monster, or symbol representing a monster, of a form which only a diseased fancy could conceive. If I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings; but it was the general outline of the whole which … Continue reading

abandoned asylums

↑Environmental Graffiti carries a ↑collection of 34 photographies shot at 10 different abandoned and meanwhile decaying former mental institutions in Great Britain. The pictures are haunting and really give me the creeps. After viewing them you know that all the versions of ↵Arkham Asylum are not the products of imagination.  via ↑entry at ↑infocult—tnx! … Continue reading

shell of ghosts

Here is a snippet from the recent ↑interview with William Gibson, which Bryan Alexander (who ↵pointed me to it) ↵liked especially: It’s harder to imagine the past that went away than it is to imagine the future. What we were prior to our latest batch of technology is, in a way, unknowable. It would be harder to accurately imagine what New York City was like the day before the advent of broadcast television than to imagine what it will be like after life-size broadcast holography comes online. But actually the New York without the television is more mysterious, because we’ve … Continue reading

what happened?

zeph’s pop culture quiz #6 Beneath these bandages is one of the biggest and internationally best known stars Hollywood had. The absolute majority of the audience remembers him for his roles in movies totally different from the one the screencap stems from. Hence the movie is not so well known today. However, he himself regarded his performance in the movie as his best achievement as an actor. So, why is he so heavily bandaged in the picture? What happened to the character he plays?     Just leave a comment with your educated guess—you can ask for additional hints, too. … Continue reading

apocalypse kit

Merchandising is a strange beast. Manufacturer ↑Gerber Legendary Blades has issued an ↑Apocalypse Kit “as seen in” the TV-series ↑The Walking Dead, based on the ↑comic book series of the same name. I perfectly do understand that this is a limited edition (only two batches of 200 sets) directed at a niche collector’s market. Nevertheless I’m not sure what to think about it. Especially as I always associate Gerber not with tools (which is their absolute main line), but with the ↑Gerber Mark II fighting knife, which not only was identified as the killing-instrument of choice in the infamous and … Continue reading

where is she?

zeph’s pop culture quiz #5 Here’s a teenage crush of mine. When I first saw her on the screen, I immediately fell for her. But the question is: Where is she in the scene pictured? The answer to the question at the same time is the title of the movie I took the screencap from. It features an absolutely high-calibre cast and during a decisive moment of the story outer space is to be seen through a microscope.  UPDATE and solution (04 December 2011): Countess Irina Petrovski (↑Silvia Tortosa) is in the ↑Horror Express (Martin 1972)—and again Alexander Rabitsch ↵got … Continue reading
